Conversations on Intangible Cultural Heritage

The aim of this conference is to draw on the 2003 UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage and to initiate a national dialogue about ICH. By initiating conversations, the conference hopes to raise awareness and visibility about the importance of ICH, support knowledge-exchange and resource mobilization, promote initiatives and good practices, and contribute to the development and growth of the ICH network in Canada.
The dialogue will be set over a span of two days and will bring in practitioners, governments, community members, academics, students, and other stakeholders interested in heritage. The conference is free and open to the public but registration is required.

The conference will be carried out in English and French with simultaneous translation. This does not reflect the rich diversity of Indigenous and other languages throughout Canada. When possible, efforts will be made to showcase this linguistic diversity. CCUNESCO will coordinate a public-facing, high-level executive summary document of the proceedings (example: Global Indigenous Circle on Open Science and Decolonization of Knowledge). Participants will be asked to provide speaking notes to the organizers ahead of time for the interpreters, but also as contributions to an outcome publication.
ICH is not limited to academic knowledge. It is foremost important to consider the daily experiences of individuals belonging to different social, cultural and linguistic backgrounds and their various strategies to deal with cultural safeguarding, language preservation, intergenerational transmission, Indigenous knowledge revival. In this regard, contribution from ICH custodians and culture-keepers is especially relevant. Because it offers new insight into the variety of ways in which human beings deal with the preservation of their intangible cultural heritage elements, the conference panels will be weaved in with “showcases” of ICH elements throughout the two days.

L’objectif de cette conférence est de s’appuyer sur la Convention de l’UNESCO pour la sauvegarde du patrimoine culturel immatériel de 2003 pour initier un dialogue national sur le PCI. Des personnes intéressées par le patrimoine et leur propre héritage ont la bienvenue. Cette conférence aura lieu sur la plateforme Zoom. La conférence est gratuite et ouverte au public, mais l’inscription est obligatoire.
